What is “Malvertising”?

The cyberattack technique known as malvertising or malicious advertising is starting to become a popular method of malware infection. Malvertising attacks are complex in nature and designed to be undetectable to unsuspecting users.

The attacker usually begins by breaching a third-party server, which allows the cybercriminal to inject malicious code within ads. Once clicked by a website visitor, the corrupted code in the ad will install malware or adware on the user’s computer. The attacker may also redirect the user to a malicious website and leverage social engineering techniques to advance the attack.

If successfully installed, the malware can damage files, redirect internet traffic, monitor user activity, steal sensitive data, or set up access points on your system. The malware can also be used to delete, block, modify, leak, or copy sensitive data which can then be sold on the dark web or back to the user for ransom.

The Solution

The solution to this is a multi-layered approach to security. Partnered with Wactchgaurd, we can detect this malicious code at the network gateway and at the endpoint using firewall and EPDR solutions. Typical anti-virus software often miss this. We are also able to block this type of attack through managed patching and routine vulnerability scanning.

Traditional anti-virus software won’t protect you against new digital threats. Managed Endpoint Protection, Detection, and Response solutions bundled and delivered by Impact Business Technology can protect your business as it operates and grows in the digital marketplace.
